Getting to Know Yolanda López

Yolanda López, Director of Communications Strategy at LoneStar College, is a prominent Hispanic leader from Ecuador whose life and career are defined by a strong commitment to education and human rights. Her story began at 19 when she left her hometown near Quito to move to Idaho, USA, without knowing the language. Her experience of adaptation and perseverance demonstrates the power of determination and the importance of learning in times of need.

Throughout her life, Yolanda has lived in several countries, including Russia and Malaysia, where she worked with refugees and vulnerable children. During her time in Malaysia, she founded educational centers for refugees and political asylum seekers, providing basic education and access to healthcare. This experience was crucial to her personal and professional development, showing her firsthand how education can change lives, like that of an Iraqi refugee who, thanks to her support, overcame a serious illness and now lives in Europe.

Yolanda’s passion for education and service to others led her to join the LoneStar College community in Texas, where she currently works to promote education for Hispanic students. With a community of over 90,000 students, Yolanda plays a key role in helping Hispanics navigate the U.S. educational system. Through her work, she seeks to empower Latino families and motivate parents to get involved in their children’s education from an early age.

One of the most valuable pieces of advice Yolanda offers to Latino parents is to get informed about the U.S. education system and support their children to take full advantage of the opportunities available. According to her, learning English is essential to open doors in this country, as mastering the language facilitates access to better job and educational opportunities. Her life experience demonstrates that it is never too late to learn and grow, and that education is the key to a better future.
