Tenor Ángel Romero: From Stafford to the Grand Stages

“I had the privilege of traveling to India to compete in Operalia, a prestigious international competition founded by Rolex, whose director is none other than Plácido Domingo, who, at over 80 years old, remains a living legend. He was one of the judges, along with his wife Marta. It was an incredible opportunity for me because I shared the stage with some of the great names in the opera world.”

Ángel Romero was born in the United States in 1995, the youngest of four boys in a humble Salvadoran family that settled in Stafford, Texas. Despite economic hardships, his parents, Roberto and Andrea, instilled strong values and an unshakable work ethic in their children. From a young age, Ángel felt a special connection to music, and even though his surroundings didn’t offer many opportunities, he always dreamed of becoming an opera singer.

His love for music began when, at just seven years old, he first saw The Three Tenors—Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras—on television. Ángel’s passion for singing was ignited that day, even though there were no professional musicians in his family. From that moment on, he knew he wanted to be a tenor.

Throughout his youth, Ángel dedicated himself to studying the saxophone in his school band, which provided him with a solid foundation in music. However, it wasn’t until he entered college that he began formal voice training. With hard work and dedication, he graduated with honors in music and business, thanks in part to the unwavering support of his brother, who helped finance his studies.

Ángel’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. His family, concerned about the financial difficulties faced by many musicians, was initially skeptical about his career. However, Ángel committed himself to giving his best and, over time, has proven that with perseverance and faith, dreams can become reality.

After years of hard work and studying at prestigious institutions, Ángel began to stand out in national and international competitions, earning a place among the best tenors of his generation. Although the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily interrupted his career, it did not dampen his passion or determination. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to perform on important stages in the United States and Europe, including a remarkable performance at the Vienna State Opera, where he was met with enthusiasm and admiration.

Ángel has just faced one of the greatest challenges of his career: the Operalia competition in India, organized by Plácido Domingo. Reaching this stage has been a monumental achievement, but for Ángel, the most important thing is to continue growing, learning, and sharing his love for opera with the world. Despite the difficulties and the expectations his family had for him, Ángel has shown that with dedication, humility, and the support of his loved ones, anything is possible.

At just 29 years old, tenor Ángel Romero continues to dream and fight to leave his mark on the world of opera. And without a doubt, he is achieving it.

“Graduating from Stafford High School in 2013, Houston Baptist University in 2017, and Yale University in 2019, this talented artist completed the Young Artist Program in Pittsburgh in 2021 and married in 2022. In the same year, he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera, followed by performances at the Dutch National Opera, Austin Opera, and St. Louis Opera in 2023. Also in 2023, he welcomed his first child. After returning to Vienna in 2024, he will compete in the prestigious Operalia Competition in Mumbai and is expected to return to both the Netherlands and Vienna in 2025.”
